Chord Overstreet and Other Things I Like During This Christmas Season
movies, music and my now December crush
A list of my December favorites this time of year for 2024: (also movie spoilers ahead)
Movies
Falling for Christmas
This was Lindsay Lohan’s debut in the Netflix Christmas movie genre back in 2022. She plays Sierra Belmont, a hotel heiress who ends up losing her memory after a skiing accident. And stars opposite of who I’m now calling my December crush, Chord Overstreet. His character Jake, is the owner of the bed and breakfast the North Star Lodge, where Sierra stays while trying to regain her memory. And of course, where they fall in love.
The Princess Switch
The first in “The Princess Switch” trilogy. This one came out in 2018 and while I have seen all of them since then, I watched this one again the other day and it is honestly really cute. Vanessa Hudgens plays Stacy, a baker in Chicago turned Princess after running into the Duchess of Montenaro, Lady Margaret Delacourt, during a baking competition. Because of this uncanny resemblance, the two decide to switch places (just for a few days). Each letting the other get to experience a different side of Christmas.
I even noticed a small easter egg nod to the “Netflix Christmas Cinematic Universe” in another Netflix original, “The Merry Gentleman” about it. When Ashley is looking at photos and newspaper clippings on the walls of her family’s venue The Rythm Room, there’s a newspaper cutout of Prince Sam and Princess Stacy, along with a photo.
One Royal Holiday
This one’s a new one for me but I had a Broadway era this year and discovered who Aaron Tveit is and that he’s starred in a Hallmark Christmas film. He plays the moody Prince of Galwick named James and meets a nurse named Anna. A snowstorm hits Connecticut and he along with his mother the Queen, find themselves staying at Anna’s family’s bed and breakfast.
I always say I like Hallmark films, but something about Hallmark Christmas films, I love them. I think it was when I started having them on in the background to add to the Christmas season ambiance a few years ago.
This Specific Gavin Creel in Eloise at Christmastime Montage
Speaking of having a Broadway era this year, I discovered who Gavin Creel was (he passed this September, sadly) and while not exactly a movie, found this montage on YouTube. He played the character Bill, a waiter at the Plaza Hotel and Eloise’s best friend. And he was the cutest/most adorablest thing ever in it! I’ve already lost count of how many times I’ve watched this. I’ve never seen the Eloise at the Plaza movies but I would love to now (there are two). They seem like they were an essential part of 2000s girlhood growing up.
Music
Avril Lavigne’s cover of Baby It’s Cold Outside
This cover of her’s came out in 2017 and I absolutely love it. Her voice is beautiful on it. I definitely recommend having it on your holiday playlist to help get into the Christmas season spirit.
Greatest Time of Year by Aly & AJ
A song that throws me back to 2000s nostalgia, it’s one of my favorites. It also throws me right back into a memory of hearing a Hannah Montana cover of Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, in a Christmas card in a Hallmark store when I was younger (they were a part of the same Disney Channel era).
Brad Kavanagh ft Tasie Dhanraj - We Shall Overcome
This is about to get really niche here really fast. But the year? 2011. The show? House of Anubis. Or at least two of its stars, Brad Kavanagh and Tasie Dhanraj. During my House of Anubis era, I particularly fell down a Brad Kavanagh rabbit hole and discovered that he sings. I found this and have listened to it every holiday season since then, or at least when I remember (this was over a decade ago by now). The music video also includes clips of the cast of House of Anubis behind the scenes laughing and having fun on set during the holidays.
Hope you enjoyed this piece and thank you for reading!
